No News is Good News

We have been given a brief that has asked us to produce research based on a headline from a newspaper which we where told to purchase on the 23rd of October. After being handed the brief we where told to have 20 opinions, 20 images, 20 statistics, 20 facts and 20 adjectives to correspond with the research.
Reading through he brief we have been told to make sure we find the subject interesting as we will need to create an engaging amount of research about it.

Newspapers
I went to the newsagent on the Saturday and decided upon a tabloid newspaper rather than a broadsheet. This was not only because the articles seem more interesting than it was that they have been known to be abit over the top on what they produce. I bought the Sun and started to read through and came across a very small article on a failed 999 call. The title read “ 999 cops ‘failed’ on death girl ” i have been intrested in public services since a young age and such a great mistake was much more appealing than “ roony gets 250k a week ”.
The Article
The article was about a 999 call made by “joanna Michael” who called the service twice whilst her ex boyfriend attacked her. The operator didn't take enough details from the first call and as a result the call was ‘downgraded’ by another handler. The story continues to mention how Joanna managed to make a second call 14 minutes after the initial call but was cut off. Police arrived at her home 22 minutes after her first call and found her dead from 22 stab wounds. Joanna lived in Mellons Cardiff. Mellons is on the borders between Gwent and Cardiff. After a probe, Gwent police fired the call handler and the first operator for gross misconduct. South Wales police disciplined theres.
Tom Davies, IPCC commissioner for Wales said “ Joanna was failed but he forces at an organizational level. She was further failed but he actions of the call handlers. The fact is Joanna called 999, an immediate police response could have been at her house in five minutes”
Joanna’s ex, Cryron Williams was 19 and is now serving life after admitting murdering her.
Further Research
I have decided to search the internet about the matter and see what different views i would find. After the online research i will create a fact sheet about the matter and then request peoples opinions on it.

Websites
BBC News:
The main part of this webpage article is about the family reaction and they go into details about the murder weapon.
Family:
Her family described the murder as "unprovoked and mindless". Police had compared the scene at her home to a horror movie. In a statement, her parents Angela and Anthony Michael welcomed the sentence for Williams, of Pentwyn, Cardiff.
They said: "On the 5th of August 2009 our family was handed its own life sentence and no prison term will ever be sufficient for the incomprehensible devastation he has caused us.
"His actions have deprived us of what should have been many, many happy years to come.
"Instead we must watch as our grandchildren are forced to grow up without their mother, and it breaks our hearts to know that they will never be able to share their special moments with her."
They described their daughter as "fantastic and loving" and said she was "much loved and highly thought of by all her family and friends".
"She will be deeply, deeply missed by us all," they said.
Williams' barrister claimed her life could have been saved if her 999 call had been handled more promptly.
Murder Weapon:
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.
The court heard Williams had broken into the house in August 2009 and found Ms Michael in bed with another man.
He then "calmly" gave him a lift home before returning to confront her.
The court heard he had armed himself with a large kitchen knife, went upstairs and stabbed her to death.
Prosecutor Patrick Harrington QC said it was a "brutal" murder with 22 stab wounds and a total of 74 injuries.
The court heard Williams had punched Ms Michael in the face before driving the other man home, causing her to call police in fear after he had left.
But Williams returned before police arrived and carried out the murder, the jury was told.

The Independent
This news website spoke more about the call and how police are changing how they process and deal with situations like this. I key note of change is that this says she was stabbed 72 times and goes into details about how the murder took place.
“A drunken Williams had burst into her home in St Mellons, Cardiff, to find Ms Michael in bed with another man. He convinced the man to leave them alone to discuss their relationship, going so far as to drive him home across Cardiff. On his return, a heated argument erupted which left Ms Michael dead after suffering 72 separate wounds at the hands of Williams. He was jailed for life with a recommendation he serve 20 years after admitting murder at Cardiff Crown Court in March.”

Wales Online
I decided to check out the local news website to see what different information they had. Everything appears to be similar to the Sun’s write up apart from a section about tributes.
Blue and white protective tape was used to cordon off the scene and more than 20 emotional floral tributes were left in memory of the “loving” young woman.
One, left by two girls called Gemma and Laura, read: “I love you and I’m going to miss you my bestest friend in the world. You will always be in my heart, never forgotten.
“Love you forever.”

We than got given the task to think of a title which was factual and use that in our next part of the brief.
Our new brief has asked us to think up of a series of three poster. One must be only type, one must only be image and one can be a mix of both. The only requirements we have been given is that the posters have to be 2:1 format and presented at A3 scale. The last being that we can use only three colours in the images and one colour can be the  stock that we are printing onto.
I decided to tackle the type only poster first as i already had the fact written down:
"22 stab wounds, 22 minutes too late, police fail"
i feel this sums up my article but i decided to include that the police " ETA after first contact 4 minutes"
this just helps let the viewer know why its such a police fail.

Here is a quick mockup of what i might do:
I decided to use colours which can be found in many places for example:
the england flag
police
barack obama's posters

My inspiration has come from the "keep calm and carry on" posters which i feel speak really well to the viewer by use of layout the way " too late " is like a divider for the piece.
The barack obama's posters i think worked so well that the colours felt so powerful and official. So by using this in my attempt i may be able to capture abit of what they did.

My Final Images
I decided to keep with the keep calm and carry on idea and develop it further making it look more official.

I tried to keep them as a set by making sure the colours where the same and the general feel of all of them was quite official.
